Rotary and Desai
From its earliest time this School has had a positive engagement with Rotary Clubs. In 1999, after he returned from his first trip there, Mike Welsh presented to the Rotary Club of Swindon Old Town at one of it’s Wednesday Breakfast meetings at Swindon Town Football Club. After the meeting Nobby Clarke, the then President, invited Mike to join the Club which he did.
In 2000, the Head Gerald M’papale, Deputy Head Truphena Manga, and Admin Officer N’thambi visited Swindon at the invitation of local people. This was the trip of a lifetime.
Mike had found a temporary site on his first visit to enable the school to continue and had started discussions with key members of the Rotary Club of Nairobi South. A contact there put him in touch with the Desai Memorial Foundation – a foundation dedicated to the education of children from very impoverished homes - and after considerable work it emerged that they were willing to provide six million Kenyan shillings (about £40,000). Two Trusts were set up: one in Kenya and one in the UK. The Chair of the Kenyan Trust was Baldip Rihal from Nairobi South and a retired senior member of the Government’s Housing Department. This Trust acted as the School Governors and ensured funds raised were properly accounted for. The Trust received the £40,000 capital sum. Mike continued to search for a permanent site which was found and purchased in 2001.
The permanent site was on quite high land, but well placed not far from the temporary site.
